CONVERSANO – AT THE “GUERCIO” COURT
Visit Conversano, the town of the famous count well known as “Guercio delle Puglie”, situated on a small hill, few kilometers far from the sea. Conversano is a very old place and its origin dates back to the Iron Age. The Castle was built by the Normans but it became the famous residence of the Counts of Conversano, above all Giangirolamo II, well know as the “Guercio” because he was a tyrannical lord. It was the “Guercio” that founded Alberobello and he called at his court the famous Neapolitan painter Paolo Finoglio, who painted the “Gerusalemme Liberata” that you can admire nowadays in the civic gallery inside the castle. Then you should not miss to visit the Romanic Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Assunta, one of main jewel of Apulian romanic style, and the Saint Benedict Monastery.
