THE HIDDEN MONOPOLI. ON THE ROUTE OF THE CRUSADERS
The Hidden Monopoli it’s a fascinated tour in Monopoli countryside to discover the Rocky villages, amaziling carved in the caves. They used to be houses, mills, stables and churches during the Middle Ages. Let’s start from the ancient harbour of the city to follow the Roman Via Traiana traveled for centuries by armies and pilgrims. The first stop is a crypt with paintings on the walls, an underground oil mill and an olive grove with millennials trees. The second stop is a grotto church next to the ruins of the ancient road built by the emperor Trajan at the beginning of the second century AD. To get there, we follow a path that crosses a huge olive grove into the bed of an old dry river called “lama”. The last stop is the largest village in the area carved into the rock with houses, stables, an underground oil mill and above all a crypt dating back to the end of the 11th century with wonderful frescoes, proof of religious and cultural events between East and West. Finally we come back to the starting point to finish the tour tasting typical Apulian products.
